OUR MISSION: To Become One of the Healthiest Campuses in America

St. John’s University’s Department of Student Wellness (SWELL) has created a strategic alliance with UnitedHealthcare on a series of wellness initiatives to improve the health and well-being of St. John’s students with the goal of becoming one of the “healthiest college campuses in America.”

“College is a critical time for students to learn how to take care of themselves, but it is often difficult to find time for good self-care,” said Dr. Kathryn Hutchinson, Vice President for Student Affairs.  “Helping students attain a healthy weight and reduce stress by encouraging them to exercise and eat nutritiously are among our highest wellness priorities.  Working with UnitedHealthcare, we can help support students’ health goals and provide them the information they need to make healthy decisions. “

St. John’s SWELL staff and student volunteers will launch a “Healthy Student” initiative, host general health education events (including wellness fairs and “healthy-eating days”), develop a year-long social media wellness campaign and create stress reduction activities and materials, which include the launch of the Stressbusters mobile app offering tools, tips and exercises in addition to other programs supported by UnitedHealthcare.

“UnitedHealthcare welcomes the opportunity to work with organizations like St. John’s that share our commitment to helping people live healthier lives,” said Jeff Alter, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, and a St. John’s alumnus.  “We need to provide young people the tools and support they need to establish healthy habits that will stay with them long after graduation.”
