Accident and Sickness
Insurance
St. John's University makes available accident and sickness
insurance to all students through University Health Plans.
University health insurance coverage is mandatory for
students in University Housing and International students on an F1
or J1 visa. Yearly coverage will be effective from August
15, 2012 through August 14, 2013.
There has been much in the news over the past two years regarding
Health Care Reform and The Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act (PPACA). The United States Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) recently issued final rules establishing
requirements for student health insurance coverage under
PPACA. Starting with the 2012/2013 academic year, the new
rules require Colleges and Universities to implement a number of
benefit enhancements including:
- An increase in the maximum Prescription Drug Benefit to
$100,000 from the current $1,100.
- 100% coverage for Preventive Care, including annual physicals
and certain immunizations.
These mandated benefit enhancements represent significant
improvements to coverage under the plan. The new rates for graduate
and undergraduate are as follows:

Residence Students
The University will automatically provide and charge for health
insurance for those residence students who have not waived the
University provided insurance. The charge for insurance will be
added to the semester invoice which is due and payable with the
tuition and fee charges. New Spring residence students are required
to submit their insurance information online at www.universityhealthplans.com to
waive the insurance coverage by February 6, 2013. A $100 penalty
will be charged if a waiver is received between February 6, 2013
and February 28, 2013. There will be NO WAIVERS ACCEPTED after this
date.
Commuter Students
Accident and Sickness Insurance is also available to all full-time
and part-time commuter students. This insurance can be purchased by
enrolling online at www.universityhealthplans.com.
The last day to enroll for Spring 2013 is February 5, 2013.
International Students
All F1 and J1 students are required to participate in the St.
John’s University’s accident and sickness insurance plan. This
insurance is mandatory for the student’s entire enrollment at the
University.
