Influenza

The headlines warn us every winter -- with good reason.

The Flu Season lasts from November through April, bringing discomfort to many and posing a real health risk for others. But there are ways to avoid the flu.

What is the Flu?
It is a contagious respiratory illness cause by influenza viruses. Each year, 35 to 50 million Americans are infected. Symptoms include fever (usually high), headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat and muscle aches.

How Does Flu Spread?
Flu viruses spread in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. The viruses usually spread from person to person, though sometimes people are infected by touching a surface with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
