The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the
Influenza virus. It can cause mild to severe illness. The best way
to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each fall.
October and November are the best months to get vaccinated but
getting vaccinated in December can still be beneficial since flu
activity usually occurs in January or later. The groups of
people who the Centers for Disease Control recommend be vaccinated
are the following:
- Children age 6 months until their fifth birthday.
- Pregnant women.
- People who are 50 years of age or older.
- People of any age who have chronic lung disease, kidney disease
or a weakened immune system.
- People who live in assisted living facilities or nursing
homes.
- People who live with anyone listed above.
- Health care workers.
Anyone who wishes to receive a flu vaccine should speak with
his/her healthcare provider before being vaccinated.
Remember, the flu is spread mainly from person to person by
coughing and sneezing or by touching something with the flu virus
on it. You can help prevent the spread of colds and flu by
covering your cough or sneeze and by washing your hands.
The New York City Department of Health is offering flu vaccines at
various locations throughout the 5 boroughs. Call 311 or go
to the Department of Health Web site for more
information.
