Resume Writing Tips

A resume is a descriptive summary of your background.

  • It is important to have a specific purpose or job objective in mind.
  • Ideally, a resume should be one page.
  • A resume must not contain any spelling or grammatical errors. Therefore, have a number of people proof read your final draft.
  • Emphasize your strengths and achievements by CAPITALIZING, bolding, and spacing.
Utilize action verbs when describing work or activities.
  • Avoid using the pronoun "I".
  • A resume should have even margins, .75 minimum.
  • Make sure that you include a telephone number and an e-mail address.
  • If you live in a Residence Hall, be sure to include both school and home addresses.
  • Make certain that you draw attention to all achievements, honors, and awards that you received in college, in your activities, or in your employment.
  • List jobs and higher educational institutions in reverse chronological order.
  • If your resume is too lengthy or wordy, discern which information is most relevant and marketable and omit unnecessary information. Information should be concise.
  • Your resume must look professional. Therefore, you should have it laser printed.
  • Use white or off white bond (resume) paper.
  • Advisors from the Career Center are available to assist you and answer your questions regarding your resume.

References

Although it is not necessary, if you have references you may include the statement "Furnished upon request." After completing your resume, prepare a separate printed list of references you intend to use. Do not mail it with your resume, unless instructed, but have it with you and ready if an interviewer asks for references. Your references should consist of previous employers, supervisors to whom you reported or perhaps a professor who knows you well. Be certain to secure permission from these people to use their names. The list should include name, title, name of company, address and phone number.
