A target letter is used to inquire about opportunities in
companies that may or may not currently have position
openings. Targeted mailings are not generic mass mailings of
hundreds of letters and resumes. Rather, a targeted mailing
campaign involves sending a tailored cover letter and resume to
each company listed on your 'target list,' or your list of those
companies for which you would most like to work. The key to
an effective target letter is to write a letter that demonstrates
your understanding of the company's current direction (new
products/services, mergers/acquisitions, philosophy, etc.) and
effectively highlights how you can positively contribute to the
organization.
