Correspondence

Your cover letter is an opportunity for you to sell yourself and highlight those skills that qualify you to work for the particular company for which you are applying.  This is your chance to showcase your writing skills and to persuade the employer you are the one they should hire for the job.  Do not regurgitate your resume.  Instead, provide examples of how and when you applied those qualifications highlighted on your resume and include your results and accomplishments as it pertains to the position and company.

Skilled cover letter writers will also incorporate current knowledge of the company, i.e. management style, products, how they differ from the competition, etc.  This will attract the reader's attention, show you are truly interested in the organization and illustrate that you are not simply forwarding a generic form letter to every potential employer.  If a contact name is not listed, call the company to find out the name of the person responsible for hiring within the department for which you wish to work.  Most importantly, do not forget to proofread your work, because a grammatical error may cost you an interview.
