Medical School

Freshman Year

  • Meet with a career counselor
  • Meet with the premedical advisor Dr. Jay Zimmerman and register for the Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee zimmermj@stjohns.edu.
  • Enroll in a yearlong science course to fulfill admission requirements designated by premedical advisor
  • Explore extracurricular activities (i.e. volunteering at a hospital or nursing home)
  • Begin researching medical schools
  • Log on to the American Medical College Application Service

Sophomore Year

  • Enroll in another one to two required science courses
  • Meet with a career counselor and premedical advisor
  • Strive for the Watson Pre-Medical Honor Society at SJU (members inducted annually)
  • Continue activities
  • Get a research internship
  • Work in a local hospital

Junior Year

  • Meet with a career counselor and premedical advisor
  • Enroll in one to two required courses (plan to be finished with the prerequisites by the end of your junior year)
  • Start looking into scholarships for medical school
  • Begin studying for the MCAT
  • In January, get information and register for the MCAT
  • In April, take the MCAT
  • During May and June, finalize a list of approximately 12 schools; request three to five letters of recommendation from professors, faculty members, supervisors, etc.; work on your application essay
  • In June, work on your American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application and send in all applications to the 12 schools

Senior Year

  • Start receiving interview requests and secondary application materials from interested medical schools
  • Visit the University Career Services for help with the interview (Workshops, Mock, etc)
  • Get all of your recommendation letters
  • Turn in all secondary materials and check with schools to be certain your application files are complete
  • In January and February, check financial aid information and due dates for possible schools and complete and turn in your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • In May, choose your school, graduate from college and get ready to enter medical school
