Application Process

Ideally, you should begin the process of researching, choosing, and applying for graduate school several months in advance of when you would like to begin. The following steps should be completed in order for maximum benefit.

  • Research careers and areas of interest
  • Research institutions and programs
  • Register and prepare for appropriate entrance exams
  • Investigate financial aid opportunities
  • Take required entrance exams
  • Request application, bulletin and financial aid information
  • Visit institutions to talk with admissions staff/graduate studies office, and faculty of program.
  • Attend open houses and graduate/professional school presentations
  • Meet with someone in the financial aid office to defer student loans and pick up new financial aid forms
  • Investigate national scholarships, fellowships and financial aid sources
  • Write your personal statement
  • Obtain letters of recommendation from faculty and/or professionals in the field with whom you have worked.
  • Make copies of all application materials
  • Send completed application materials
  • Follow up with a phone call after a week or so to ensure that the institutions received your application materials and that they are complete.
  • Decide which school you are accepting and inform all others of your decision.
