I don't even know what I like - how am I
expected to know what I want to be?
A phone appointment with an advisor can help you identify
your VIPS (values, interests, personality and skills) to begin
exploring career
options. You'll receive a personal career profile and
learn how to research careers.
I hear you offer career assessments - I'm
not on campus to take them - now what do I do?
You can call The Career Center at (718) 990-6375 to make a
phone appointment. Once you talk to a career counselor, they
will be able to evaluate whether you should take an assessment and if so, which one. Many assessments
are available online, so a career counselor can guide you through
it. Career counselors are also available to work with you via
email to send you additional information and worksheets.
I take all of my classes online - how can The
Career Center help me?
The Career Center is open Monday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Tuesday -
Thursday from 8:30 am-7 pm, and Friday from 8:30 am-3 pm.
(Summer hours change). Students can call to make a phone appointment during
these hours for an hour session. After the initial phone
session, some advisors can assist you via email, depending on the
circumstance.
College is expensive - tuition, books,
laboratory fees - how can I get some extra cash for me?
The Career Center has a variety of resources available
through their website to assist you with discovering part-time,
full-time
and internship
opportunities including MonsterTRAK
What is MonsterTRAK?
Listings of positions for all majors, including Education,
are offered to students and alumni on-line, through MonsterTRAK.
In addition, MonsterTRAK will enable you to access the COACH (Count on Alumni for
Career Help) program. COACH provides students access to a
database of alumni who are available for informational interviewing
and networking.
Register with MonsterTRAK to receive important e-mails regarding
events, internships and employment opportunities.
Contact the Career Center for the college password if you are
registering from a computer off campus.
I know I want to be successful - but how
do I get there?
The Career Center can help you understand your major and/or
field. Learn more about your major and/or field by
establishing contacts with St. John's alumni and getting
information from those who have "been there and done that".
The Career Center can help you understand your career options by
guiding you in exploring options for career-related experience such
as internships, part-time jobs, summer jobs, etc. View
various information on The Career Center's website regarding Resume
Writing, Interviewing, Networking, obtaining Internships, How To
Work Job Fairs, COACH and other programs.
I don't have much experience and I have to
write a resume... ?
Set up a phone appointment with a Career Center advisor who
will help you write a resume that best
reflects your accomplishments and career goals. We focus on
what employers look for in terms of resume content and format.
In addition, advisors can help you learn how to write targeted
cover
letters, showing you the proper format that will grab an
employer's attention to help you stand out from the crowd.
Advisors can also assist you with the proper format of thank you
letters and other correspondence used in the job search.
I have a lot of questions - how can I
speak with someone for personalized answers?
You can set up an individual phone appointment with an
advisor that lasts for an hour to go over anything you would
like. Please call the office to schedule an
appointment. Evening hours are available.
I'm only a freshman. I don't need
The Career Center - right?
Career
Development is an ongoing process. Applying for jobs upon
graduation includes marketing yourself and the skills/knowledge
that you've acquired to employers. The Career Center provides
services that assist students throughout their college experience
beginning as early as freshman year that intend to develop the
skill set employers look for in candidates.
I'm completing my graduate degree - The
Career Center is only for undergraduates - right?
The mission of The Career Center is to provide lifelong
support and resources to St. John's University students and alumni
as they strive to identify and achieve their career goals. Undergraduate, graduate
and MBA students as well as alumni may contact The Career
Center at any point in their career development for
information.

The Career Center services are easily accessible to anyone
who has a computer and/or phone. Our career advisors are
willing to work with any student and/or alumnus via
