St. John’s students will once again serve the poor and
experience living in a village in Panama.
The Service Plunge is from May 16 – 28,
2011.
Our St. John’s University student volunteers’ work is amazingly
varied as we address the particular needs of the community in which
we live. In the past, students have assisted in painting the
community school, constructing a chapel, rebuilding someone’s
house, or working the fields of the community. During their time in
Panama, students will stay in pairs with a host family in order to
more fully understand what daily life is truly like for this
Panamanian community.
Please note: Students do not need to know Spanish to
participate.
Volunteers can expect the following:
- 6-hour work days
- Simple living
- Daily Reflection
Applicants are responsible for the following:
- Completed
application due on or before the deadline
- Attendance at a mandatory information session to sign up for
your interview
- Attend an interview if invited to do so
Selected Volunteers are responsible for the following:
- Attend one fall mandatory formation session
- Attend three spring mandatory formation sessions
- Payment and follow-up with all necessary medical shots
- Payment and follow-up for passport and travel visa
- Attending three mandatory formation dates in the spring
- Fundraising efforts as determined by the group
- Signed travel waiver
The cost is $350 plus an additional fundraised amount of at
least $150. This will help with the cost of all travel,
lodging and meal expenses.
Complete the online application form. Registration ends October
15, 2010.
Once the applications are received and reviewed you will be
notified if you are moving on to the information session and
interview part of the process.
Students who are given an interview must attend a mandatory
information session. At this session, you will have an
opportunity to sign up for an interview.
If accepted, students will be expected to attend one mandatory
formation day in the Fall semester and three mandatory formation
dates in the spring semester.
