St. John’s University kicks off its celebration for Black History Month 2013 this week with educational and interactive displays highlighting St. John’s multicultural organizations on St. John’s Queens and Staten Island campuses. The theme of this year’s celebration is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington,” in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Throughout February students will be able to enjoy and participate in various panel discussions, community service projects, lectures and entertainment.

St. John’s Sociology and Anthropology professor Roderick Bush, Ph.D., and St. John’s History professors Lara Vapnek, Ph.D., and Elizabeth Herbin-Triant, Ph.D., will be leading a discussion with students on the history of the March on Washington, Jim Crow Laws, and the Emancipation Proclamation. The program will take place at 7 p.m.
