St. John's University Celebrate 40 Years on Staten Island

November 07, 2011

St. John’s University will mark the 40th Anniversary of its Staten Island campus with a gala Birthday Celebration on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at The Hilton Garden Inn on Staten Island. Dr. Jerrold Ross, Academic Vice President for the Staten Island campus and Dean of The School of Education at St. John’s, will host the event.

St. John’s will pay special tribute to four individuals who have made significant contributions to the University and the Staten Island community-at-large since the campus opened in 1971. Those being recognized include John J. Brennan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History and Former Director of the Honors Program; Theresa Cantarella ’73NDC, ’77GEd, Director of Student Enrollment Services; Michael Capobianco, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Mathematics; and Teresa Trimarco, Ph.D. ’00HON, Professor Emerita, Education.

In addition to acknowledging this significant St. John’s milestone, the celebration coincides with the 350th Anniversary of the founding of Staten Island. Closing ceremonies for this year-long celebration will take place on December 18, 2011 at St. John’s Grymes Hill campus, with student presentations and a performance by the Richmond County Orchestra.

The site of what would eventually become the University’s Staten Island campus was originally purchased in the early 20th Century by immigrant John Gans. In the early 1930s, the Gans Family befriended Mother Saint Egbert, later known as Sister Helen Flynn, a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame (CND).

In 1933, the family sold their mansion, which became the new Notre Dame College, a Catholic undergraduate college for women. Notre Dame College served the community as a premier women’s college for over 30 years, until it was incorporated with St. John’s University as its Staten Island campus in 1971.
