Parents waved as their sons and daughters began college
life on August 25, lugging computers, televisions, clothes and
other belongings to their new homes – the state-of-the-art
residence halls of St. John’s, New York City’s largest Catholic
University.
The University welcomed more than 1,700 freshmen and parents
during the annual Move-In Day. Spirits ran high as student leaders,
faculty, staff, and ROTC cadets eagerly assisted new students and
their parents as they moved into residence halls at the Queens and
Staten Island campuses.
“Freshmen Move-In Day this year was a great success!” says
Jackie Lochrie, Associate Dean for Student Services-Student Life on
the Queens campus. “Through the collaborative effort of Public
Safety, Information Technology, Facilities, Student Life and
Residence Life the students’ move into the dorms was very smooth
and efficient.”
Kimberly J. Palmieri-Mouded, Assistant Dean of Student
Development on the Staten Island campus expressed her excitement
about the campuses’ Move-In Day events, “Once the students were
settled in their dorms, we had a huge BBQ followed by a special
mass, blessing both our new students and their parents. It's always
a great opportunity for students to meet one another in comfortable
surroundings as they embark on this new experience in their
lives.”
Freshman Move-In Day also provides incoming freshmen with the
opportunity to meet their new roommates and become accustomed to
living on a college campus. The week concludes with the
New Student Convocation and STJ Fest the day before classes
begin, Wednesday,
September 1.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to move away
from home and meet new people,” said Victor Zambrano, who will soon
begin his first year as a member of St. John’s University’s Fencing
team. “Even though I’m a native New Yorker, living away from home
will be a completely different experience for me.”
Move-In Day was the kick-off to St. John’s Week of Welcome – an
entire week filled with activities and events specially created for
the newest members of the St. John’s community. The Foam Party,
Sunday Picnic, Outdoor Movie Night and Twilight Carnival were just
some of the fun events taking place throughout the week.
