Eleventh Annual Event Honors Spirit of Service Awardees at Waldorf
= Astoria, October 30
St. John’s University will hold its Eleventh Annual President’s
Dinner on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at The Waldorf=Astoria Hotel
in New York City. St. John’s President, Rev. Donald J.
Harrington, C.M., will host what has become the University’s
premier fundraising event. Last year the President’s Dinner
generated a record $2.1 million. Funds generated from the
President’s Dinner are used as scholarship assistance to directly
benefit the University’s more than 20,000 students (enrolled at
five locations – Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, Oakdale, New
York and Rome, Italy).
Bruce Beck, veteran WNBC-TV sportscaster, will serve as Master
of Ceremonies at the black tie event highlighted by the
presentation of the prestigious Spirit of Service Awards. These
awards are given to exceptional individuals who have lived their
lives in accordance with the Vincentian philosophy of caring and
concern for others, values that have served as the foundation of
the St. John’s mission since 1870.
This year’s honorees include Mary Carnesecca and Lou Carnesecca
’50C, ’60GEd, ’00HON, Assistant to the President and Naismith Hall
of Fame Basketball Coach, St. John’s University, George T.
McDonald, Founder and President, The Doe Fund, Inc. and Maria C.
Schwartz and Joseph H. Schwartz ’70C, ’72MBA, Retired Partner,
Wellington Management Company.
The Eleventh Annual President’s Dinner, the largest single
annual event at the Waldorf, will offer guests an opportunity to
reflect upon the University’s unprecedented achievement while
looking ahead to a future filled with unlimited potential.
Many former Spirit of Service Award honorees from previous
President’s Dinners will be in attendance to celebrate with Rev.
Harrington, C.M. and the St. John’s University community.
Lesley H. Collins ’83SVC and William L. Collins ’76C, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer, Brencourt Advisors LLC, will serve as
2008 Dinner Co-Chairs, and Mary P. Tobin ’00HON and Peter J. Tobin
’65CBA, ’96HON will serve as Honorary Chairs for the former Spirit
of Service Award honorees.
