St. John's University Acquires Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers School of Allied Health Professions in Fresh Meadows

March 02, 2007

St. John’s University announced today that it has closed on the purchase of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers School of Allied Health Professions (Saint Vincent’s) in Fresh Meadows, N.Y. In addition, new education programs obtained from Saint Vincent’s in the acquisition will be offered by the University’s College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions effective immediately.

The Saint Vincent’s location, a 40,000 square foot building, will be renamed the Dr. Andrew J. Bartilucci Center (for St. John’s University Dean Emeritus of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions). The building is located approximately 1.5 miles from the University’s Queens Campus and will continue to offer existing Saint Vincent’s certificate programs.

“We are elated to acquire the prestigious Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers facility in Fresh Meadows which has been a staple of quality education for many years,” said Robert Mangione, R.Ph. Ed.D., St. John’s University Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. “St. John’s College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions plans to continue to enhance program offerings while maintaining a level of excellence that we are accustomed to in producing today’s top pharmacy and allied health professions students that will go on to be the leaders of tomorrow in our industry.”

All Saint Vincent’s programs are properly accredited and have been affiliated with St. John’s since 1975. The degree programs currently offered by St. John’s (STJ) in collaboration with Saint Vincent’s include: a B.S. four-year Physician’s Assistant degree (first two years at STJ’s Queens campus, second two years at the Dr. Andrew J. Bartilucci Center and a final year at affiliated hospitals and clinics), a B.S. four-year Medical Technology degree (first three years at STJ’s Queens campus, fourth year at the Dr. Andrew J. Bartilucci Center and affiliated hospitals) and a B.S. four-year Pathologist Assistant degree program (first three years at STJ’s Queens campus, the final year at affiliated hospitals).

Independent students who are enrolled at Saint Vincent’s from other colleges will continue their studies at St. John’s. The Saint Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centers Nursing School is not included with the St. John’s University acquisition.

“We are pleased that these important allied health education programs are transitioning to St. John’s University as Saint Vincent’s returns to its core functions and mission as a healthcare provider in New York,” said Guy Sansone, President and CEO of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers. “St. John’s was a natural home for these programs given our shared history over the last thirty years.”

St. John’s University will now issue the certificate programs previously offered by Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers (in Fresh Meadows) at the Dr. Andrew J. Bartilucci Center in the areas of: Physician Assistant (two-year for those students who already possess a B.S. degree and have successfully completed the science pre-requisites for entrance), Medical Technologist (one-year) and Radiology Technician (two-year). Also, EMS Institute training programs for EMT (13 weeks) and EMT/Paramedic (11 months) will be included as certificate program offerings.

St. John’s University will retain current faculty, staff and administration of Saint Vincent’s in Fresh Meadows.
