A little rain couldn’t dampen the fun at this year’s Staten
Island Barbeque and Family Fun Fair.

Held on the Great Lawn of the Staten Island campus, the event was a
blast for alumni, friends and their families, providing a perfect
opportunity to catch up with old classmates while enjoying great
food and entertainment.
The scattered showers throughout the day didn’t stop the
guests from enjoying themselves.
“The weather hasn’t been cooperating today, but that’s not such a
big deal,” said Maria Tychi ’83CBA. “It’s still been a great time.
My kids are having a lot of fun and it’s always great to see my
former classmates, rain or shine.”
Kids had a blast thanks to the barbeque’s wealth of attractions:
five bounce houses, a DJ, face painting, an egg toss and a variety
of other games and rides. A fire truck even came by later in the
afternoon, allowing the children to learn about how it works and
take photos on it.
The adults, meanwhile, were impressed with the extensive food
selection.
“We’re all excited to be here – the kids are loving the games and
events, we’ve got the terrific food, and it’s just a great place to
be,” said Larry Durso ’75NDC. “Sure, the weather hasn’t been so
great, but we’re still making the best of it and really having a
blast.”
Past attendees of the barbeque were glad to be back and eager to
once again show their families where they went to school.
“St. John’s was a fantastic experience when I went here as a
student,” said Bob Dugan ’96NDC. “The University helped me get
where I am in life, so I love returning here and showing my family
the campus. I’ve been coming several years now, and I just love how
family-oriented it all is.”
He added, “The rain couldn’t stop us – we had a great time as
always.”
Nick Legakis ’97SVC, ’07MPS, Director of Institutional Advancement
for the Staten Island campus, loved the barbeque’s family
environment.
“This is the fourth year we’ve hosted this event, and every time
it’s a blast,” he said. “I’m thrilled to see the alumni bring their
families to campus and enjoy themselves. Every year, this barbeque
reminds me of what a fantastic community we have here at St.
John’s.”
