There’s always a sense of anticipation that precedes the first
pitch of any baseball game, and the excitement is heightened even
more when you’re up close and personal at a minor league contest.
So when alumni and friends of St. John’s University gathered for
the Lakewood BlueClaws-Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball game on
Thursday, August 19, 2010, they knew they wouldn’t be
disappointed.

Hosted by the Central New Jersey Alumni Chapter, the fans got into
the fun as soon as they arrived at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood,
New Jersey, where they mingled and socialized while enjoying a
traditional barbecue in the picnic area of the stadium.
“The
New Jersey alumni chapters are thriving right now,” noted Nicholas
A. Legakis ’97SVC, ’07MPS, Director, Institutional Advancement,
Staten Island. “Over the past year, St. John’s has tripled the
amount of events we’ve hosted, and the response from our alumni has
been incredible.”
While many alumni have been to other St. John’s events in the past,
for some it was their first opportunity to come home to the
University that is still an important part of their
lives.
“This is my first alumni event and I’m definitely enjoying it,”
said Michael Wolfe ’04TCB. “It’s a great opportunity to meet some
new alumni and to network with other St. John’s
graduates.”
Diane Griffin-Wilmot ’02MBA agreed. “It’s nice to get back into the
loop and see alumni here in New Jersey,” she said. “I’m looking
forward to doing some more [of these events] in the future.”
Children and baseball have always been a natural combination, and
the youngsters had a great time at the barbecue and throughout the
evening.
“This is a good family event,” exclaimed Mike Brill ’79MBA. “It’s a
really fun night out and a wonderful opportunity to get together
with friends.”
