Alumni Enjoy Long Island Ducks Fan Appreciation Day

September 22, 2009

On Sunday, September 20, 2009 40 alumni and friends gathered at Citibank Park in Central Islip for the final Long Island Ducks baseball game of the 2009 season.  The excitement was heightened by the many special activities, promotions and give-aways that always mark Fan Appreciation Day, traditionally held on a team’s last home game of the regular season.

The festive mood was in evidence even before the first pitch, as guests gathered for a pre-game barbeque at the stadium’s Entenmann’s Picnic Area.  Following the barbeque fans took their seats to watch the Ducks defeat the Camden Riversharks in a thrilling 12-10 victory, clinching their sixth Atlantic League Division Title.

Alumni were grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with friends while enjoying a late summer minor league baseball game.

“This is the first time that I have ever been to a Ducks game or a St. John’s event,” said Philip Macari '69CBA, '75MBA.  “It’s a great chance to do something with family and friends close to home.”

For many alumni, attending St. John’s events has become a regular part of their lives.  “I attended [Alumni] Reunion [Celebration 2009] in May with our children and we had a terrific time,” remarked Anne Picone '91SVC, whose three children were all wearing “Future St. John’s Alumni” t-shirts.  “When we saw the opportunity to attend a Ducks game close to home with the University we thought it was a wonderful idea and a great value.”

Barbara Lipari '92MBA remarked on the strong ties that bind her to alma mater.  “My husband (Joseph Lipari '92MBA) and I met in grad school at St. John’s and were married on campus.   In the spring we attended the Blessing of the Couples and had a great time.  We had never been to a Ducks game and thought that this would be a great chance to continue that relationship [with St. John’s].  We’re having a great time!”
