Five years have passed since Ashish Juvekar ‘10G left his native
India for an outstanding science graduate education at St. John’s.
Today, having earned his Ph.D. in
Biology at the University, he has been selected to continue his
research at one of the world’s renowned medical centers.
This fall Ashish begins a post-doctoral research
fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center — a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical
School. Ashish attributes his success in achieving the
prestigious appointment to the challenging curriculum and
supportive faculty of the
Department of Biological Sciences at St. John’s.
“From the start, St. John’s groomed me to be a professional
researcher, says Ashish. “I acquired the technical skills currently
being used in cutting edge research and developed a strong
publication record, which is vital preparation for this
field.”
“Ashish has proven to be a wonderful role model for both our
doctoral and undergraduate students,” said
Ivana Vancurova, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biological
Sciences and Ashish’s faculty mentor. “Ashish is a shining example
of how intensive laboratory training as well as opportunities to
publish and attend international conferences can lead to successful
careers in the sciences.”
According to Dr. Vancurova, Ashish’s research findings will aid in
the development of new medicines and drug combination therapies to
treat lymphoma. With the help of Dr. Vancurova, he also has
uncovered a new mechanism through which drugs can inhibit protein
activities that are found in certain cancers.
“The sky’s the limit with a degree from St. John’s,” says Ashish.
“I will always be grateful to the University for providing me with
the education and opportunities that are on par with Harvard’s
standards.”
