Scholar-Athlete Gavin Buckley: Getting the Most out of the St. John’s Experience

As a high-school senior in Maryland, Gavin Buckley ‘11C wanted to attend a big-city college that offered a strong sense of community, challenging academic programs and a chance to play lacrosse. He chose St. John’s University.

Gavin Buckley Success Story

“St. John’s New York City location was a definite plus — it seemed like a really exciting place to be,” he explains. “Plus, St. John’s lacrosse program was new, so joining a new program and helping it reach a high level of competitiveness was really appealing.”

Today, Gavin is co-captain of St. John’s lacrosse team. He is also completing the academic program of his dreams—the five-year B.A./M.A. degree program in English. The fact that he is a very talented athlete, leader and role model could be why Gavin was invited to join the steering committee of the University’s recently completed NCAA Division I Athletics Self-Study Recertification. Or perhaps it was earning ECAC weekly honors three times last season.  Or being named a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award candidate.

Beyond the classroom, Gavin cherishes opportunities to make friends and help others. One of 29 students elected to this year’s President’s Society — the top honors society at St. John’s — Gavin embraces the University’s Vincentian mission by engaging in service with his teammates. He also values the friendly atmosphere in the residence halls. “I’ve loved it here at St. John’s. Not only am I getting a great education, but I’m making amazing contacts, including alumni who come back — some after 50 years — out of gratitude for all the University has done for them.”
