At the start of a new year and a new semester, St. John’s
University warmly welcomes all of its returning and new students.
We hope you enjoyed some much needed time off with loved ones and
that you look forward to a spring semester filled with lessons,
experiences and personal growth.
Many of you have probably made New Year’s resolutions to achieve
better grade point averages, so we encourage you to dive right in
and take advantage of all of the academic resources St. John’s
provides, such as the Institute for
Writing Studies and the University’s Learning
Support Services. We would also like to remind you that St.
John’s is committed to providing students with superior academic
programs as well as a fulfilling campus life and this semester is
no exception. There are tons of events and activities planned that
will make this semester better than ever!
During the spring semester, we celebrate St. John’s Founder’s
Week which recognizes the spiritual transformation of the
University’s founder, St. Vincent de Paul. There is a full calendar
of events in honor of this year’s theme: “Vincentian
Transformation: Changing Hearts, Creating Peace.”
Over 100 St. John’s
clubs and organizations will gather at the spring Activities
Fair, to introduce students to an array of extra-curricular
activities ranging from cultural and political associations to
academic and religious organizations. It will be a great
opportunity to meet new people and get involved on
campus.
This year’s Academic Lecture Series: “Issues Affecting America”
continues in the spring semester with noted speakers such as world
renowned poet, writer, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni and
Olympic Gold Medalist Jennie Finch, who will be addressing issues
that concern all Americans.
Every Saturday evening, the office of campus activities and student
government will present their Java Johnnies Coffee House Series,
where students can sip their favorite caffeinated beverage in a
relaxed and fun atmosphere while listening to the poetry, comedy
and music provided by talented artists.
Also taking place this semester are the
Discover the World, Rome and
Paris spring programs. Take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to travel and learn abroad in Rome, Spain, France or
Ireland. It is the perfect time of the year to enjoy a picnic near
the breathtaking Eiffel Tower or attend mass held by the Pope in
St. Peter’s Square.
Just before the semester ends, St. John’s will host its annual
Spring Week. Spring week is filled with exciting events from
fashion shows and concerts to the
Spring Fling carnival. The carnival will contain traditional
amusement park rides, game booths and contests. It is the perfect
way to enjoy the eagerly awaited warm weather and take some time to
relax and have fun before finals.
This is just a preview of what’s in store for the spring 2009
semester. There are hundreds of events planned, so
check back frequently for updates on what’s going on around campus.
Most importantly, study hard and good luck this semester!
