Close to 3,000 students, faculty and staff filled
the Great Lawn of the Queens
campus for a day of free rides, games and camaraderie on April
27 as St. John’s University held its annual Spring Fling
Carnival.
While tents, rides and game booths slowly rose on the Great Lawn in
the days before the event, rain threatened to dampen the
festivities. But the sun shone brightly on Friday as the crowds
enjoyed an afternoon of fun before finals week, May 2 – 8.
Mary Pelkowski, Assistant Dean for Student Engagement, said,
“Spring Fling is a signature tradition at St. John’s. Students
really look forward to this — it serves as a finale for the
academic year.” The event is sponsored by the
Student Programming Board and
Residence Hall Association, in partnership with the
Office of Campus Activities.
“Spring Fling is a chance to unwind and have some fun
before preparing for finals. It’s a great way to end the semester,”
said Abe Sater ’12CPS. Adelle Platon ’12CPS added, “It really is
like a carnival with rides, games and cotton candy. It’s nice that
St. John’s does this for the students.”
The most popular attractions included a Ferris wheel, bumper cars
and a jumbo slide, as well as customized giveaways and interactive
games.
A part of St. John’s annual Spring Week celebration, the event also
features special student activities including a poetry slam,
fashion show, an ice cream breakfast, the Spring Music Fest concert
and a fundraiser for disaster relief — all reflecting the
University’s ongoing commitment to providing its student with a
vibrant campus life.
