The safety of our students is the top priority of all the
members of the St. John's University community. In light of
the tragedy at Virginia Tech, the University began to explore new
ways of keeping our students out of immediate danger. The best
system was found to be one in which students, faculty,
administrators, and staff could elect to receive text messages and
voicemails on their personal cell phones. If the University is
being threatened, the Department of Public Safety will send alerts
that provide information and clear directions to all
constituents. In addition, alerts will be posted on the St.
John’s website.
The system proved to work on September 26, 2007 when a gunman
was apprehended for carrying a rifle in a plastic bag on the St.
John's University Queens Campus. University community members
were sent messages immediately detailing that the campus was on
lockdown and to remain in one place until further notice. The
system assisted in providing a safe outcome for all. Read
the press release.
