Career Planning

Dear Parents & Families,
The Career Center would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for making the commitment to support your son or daughter on their journey to career success.  We encourage you to view our Parents & Families webpage, which provides tips and resources to assist you on how to provide that support to your student.  Additionally, we’d like to take a few moments to share some of the new and exciting programs and services that the Career Center has introduced and/or enhanced this semester for our students and ask that you encourage your student to participate and get involved.

Focus on Real Experience & Employment
Focus on Real Experience and Employment (FREE) provides students with the opportunity to navigate and plan for their career development through a progression of strategic activities and experiences that facilitate career exploration, develop marketable skills, and inspire and prepare them for a lifetime of meaningful work. Each track includes required activities and/or events along with suggested electives allowing you to customize the program to suit your student’s individual interests and needs. For more information, please visit the Career Center.

“Let’s Talk About… Internships” - Career Conversations
A series of lunchtime chats with employers offering internships and/or students who have successfully secured and completed an internship, this series of events engages students from as early as freshmen year in conversations about how to locate, prepare for, secure and then evaluate their internships.  The series will take place on Wednesdays in the Institute for Writing Studies, St. Augustine Hall, 1st Floor.  Lunch will be provided.  We welcomed our first employer Bed, Bath & Beyond on Wednesday, November 7.

Shadowing Experience
Building on the success of this program last May, we will be offering the Shadowing Experience twice this spring to sophomores and juniors.  This program is an opportunity for students to learn about career prospects and professional work environments.  This program allows students to visit with an alumnus/alumna or friend of the University in a work setting for a day. During the experience students learn what a typical day is like; explore the many opportunities available at the company/organization; and utilize networking skills to forge new relationships.  The Shadowing Experience will take place during the week of February 25-29 (Spring Break) and then again from May 15-29 and is open to sophomores and juniors in good academic standing.  For more information, contact Jennifer Grauso at (718) 990-1325.

Optimal Résumé
Introduced in September, Optimal Résumé is an easy-to-use online software program that allows students to quickly and effortlessly create essential professional documents such as résumés and cover letters.  They can even send their results directly to a counselor online for review and comments! Best of all, it's free for students!  Students Visit St. John's Central and click on the Optimal Resume icon to get started!

Should you have any questions about any of these programs, please do not hesitate to contact us.
