Partners in Prevention: A Parent's Role in
College Alcohol and Drug Use
As the fall semester comes to its halfway point, we understand that
freshmen especially may face challenges with time management
skills, negotiating class schedules, maintaining a budget,
developing new relationships, pursuing new interests and taking on
new responsibilities. The Department of Student Wellness is
committed to helping first-year students make a smooth transition
into college. Whether living at home or on campus in the residence
village, the choices students face on a daily basis may be quite
different from their experiences of just a few weeks ago while
still living at home.
However, we realize that you are still the primary influence in
your child's life, and as such, the Department of Student Wellness
wants to encourage you to continue talking with them about all
these choices and challenges, especially on the subject of alcohol
and drug use.
Every first year student is required to complete the AlcoholEdu
for College on-line course. As our "partner in prevention",
you also have the opportunity to take this course and see what they
are learning about this important health issue. Completing
this on-line program will provide avenues for open dialogue with
your son or daughter.
To access AlcoholEdu for College (For Parents), you will need a
computer with internet access and audio capabilities.
