Partners in Prevention: A Parent's Role in College Alcohol and Drug Use
SWell, Department of Student Wellness

As the fall season quickly moves towards winter, we understand freshmen may face increased challenges with time management skills, negotiating class work loads, and focusing on the end of the semester requirements.  The Department of Student Wellness continues our commitment to helping students maintain a smooth transition and a successful first semester. Whether living at home or in the residence village, the choices students face on a daily basis may create challenges.

We realize that you are still the primary influence in your child's life, and as such, the Department of Student Wellness wants to encourage you to continue talking with them about all choices and challenges they may face, especially on the subject of alcohol and drug use.

We are excited to inform you that 93% of all first year students have completed part 1 of AlcoholEdu for College, our online alcohol and other drug prevention program.  Students have also attended Freshmen Experience Workshops during the month of September to discuss issues raised in AlcoholEdu, and are challenged to further explore their expectancies of college life and alcohol.

If you have not already done so, we would encourage you to log onto AlcoholEdu for Parents and explore ways you can continue the dialogue about this important issue with your student.  To access AlcoholEdu for Parents,

  1. Go to: http://parents.alcoholedu.com/parent_login.aspx
  2. Click on New User
  3. Login ID:     9P195809Parent
  4. Click “Sign Up” and follow the on-screen prompts.

An outcome of our Department of Education Grant to reduce high risk drinking among our students is our student developed web site, www.sober24-7.com.  We encourage you to go on this site and see some of the exciting things students are doing to help fellow students stay healthy.

And finally, we want to encourage you to link onto our wellness newsletter, Student Health 101.  http://readsh101.com/stjohns.html
This online wellness newsletter is sent to students monthly and offers timely information on a wide range of wellness themes.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Department of Student Wellness at swell@stjohns.edu.
