In recent years, Greek-lettered organizations have completed more service hours than any of the other St. John’s organizations. We are very proud of that fact. Not only is being a member of a Greek organization about brotherhood and sisterhood, but it is also about becoming leaders on campus and serving our community locally, nationally and internationally. All organizations are required to complete a certain number of service hours to remain in good standing with the University. Most of the time, organizations go above and beyond this requirement. Here are some examples of how our Greek organizations are getting involved in service: Last year, 6 St. John’s undergraduates from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. spent a total of 48 hours volunteering their time with twelve students from P.S. 40, The Samuel Huntington Elementary School. Members of this Historically Black Greek Organization dedicated their time to help a group of at-risk male students. The goal of P.S. 40’s principal was to instill in her students the expectation that they will all enter and graduate from a four year college or university. Alpha Phi Alpha helped her accomplish this goal. During University Service Day, Lambda Phi Sorority helped out a local organization called Bridge to Life. This non-profit supports single mothers that struggle to provide for their children. These sorority women helped organize the storage closets and folded, sorted and fixed damaged children’s clothing that will be given out to the mother’s. Kappa Sigma Fraternity put a very creative twist on raising awareness for Breast Cancer research. As you can see from the picture, a few members dressed up as Pac-Man and the Ghosts and walked around campus to catch the attention of students, faculty and staff. They lead people to a donation table outside the library where members of the St. John’s community could buy bracelets, t-shirts and ribbons. This is just a tiny example of all the fabulous work that our Greek community is doing at St. John’s and around New York City.
