Public Interest Center is pleased to invite all St. John's Law
students to particpate in a:
LIFT Pro Bono Training
Legal Information for
Families Today (LIFT) empowers
those without lawyers to successfully self-advocate in the New York
Family Courts. Through a range of initiatives, it also enhances
access to justice for children and families by providing legal
information, community education, and compassionate guidance, while
promoting system-wide reform of the courts and public agencies.
This training program will prepare you to participate in the
following LIFT volunteer activities:
Staff Family Law Information Email
Hotline
Provide legal information, support, and referrals to Hotline users.
Under the supervision of a LIFT attorney, students will draft
responses to family law questions that are submitted to the email
hotline.
Where: Accessed remotely from any internet
connection
Hours of Operation: Flexible
Minimum Time Commitment: Flexible
Answer Questions on Family Law Information Telephone
Hotline
Provide legal support, information, and referrals to Hotline
users.
Where: LIFT’s Central Office, 350 Broadway, Suite
501
Hours of Operation: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Minimum Time Commitment: 3 hours per week
Help Families Navigate NYC Family Courts
Work side-by-side with LIFT staff at Family Court-based sites to
answer questions and address concerns about Court procedure and
family law matters, and to distribute LIFT’s Legal Resource
Guides.
Where: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, or
Staten Island Family Courthouses
Hours of Operation: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Minimum Time Commitment: 4 hours per week
Assist with Document Translation
Help non-English speakers navigate the court system by translating
LIFT’s Legal Resource Guides into languages other than
English.
Skills Required: Fluency in Arabic, Chinese,
French, Haitian-Creole, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian,
Tagalog, Urdu, or Yiddish
Where: Flexible
Minimum Time Commitment: 1 hour per week
Training and volunteering with LIFT qualify for the pro bono
service project.
