Preparation to Teach Online

Faculty members need to be certified to teach hybrid and fully online courses at St. John’s University. Hybrid courses substitute any classroom-based teaching with online learning activities.
There are two ways to receive certification:

Online Teaching Essentials

St. John’s University’s Office of Online Learning and Services offers faculty members interested in teaching hybrid or fully online courses the opportunity to enroll in Online Teaching Essentials. This four-week, facilitated online course focuses on online course design and pedagogy. The course is facilitated by a current St. John’s University faculty member with considerable online teaching experience. Enrollment will be capped at 25 students per section. Please visit our Online Teaching Essentials page to learn more and register for this course.

Advanced Online Teaching Strategies

Advanced Online Teaching Strategies (AOTS) is an optional, three-week facilitated online course designed for faculty who want to expand their knowledge and skills in the virtual classroom. The course is taught in a cohort learning model, meaning you will participate with other faculty in the same activities. It builds upon the pedagogical foundation established in Online Teaching Essentials. AOTS is taught by an active member of the St. John’s faculty chosen for their expertise in online teaching. Enrollment is capped at 20 to provide a highly personal learning experience. Visit our Advanced Online Teaching Strategies (AOTS) page to learn more and register for this course.
