All current SJU graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, administrators, staff, and faculty retirees may request interlibrary loan. Distance Ed and Study Abroad patrons may request ILL articles (copies) only. In all cases you must have an active St. John’s email address to be eligible for interlibrary loan services.
Books take approximately one to two weeks to arrive. Copies may be received as soon as the same day or may take more than a week. It is always best to place your requests well in advance of any deadlines.
Most of the time articles will be delivered to you electronically. Articles received in print will be delivered via campus mail when possible or will be sent to the Library 3rd Floor Service Desk (Queens) or the Circulation Desk (Staten Island) for pickup. We do not mail to off-campus addresses.
Loan periods and renewal options are established by the lending institution. In general, books are loaned for two to four weeks with a one-time renewal of two weeks. You may request a renewal via your ILLiad account up until the item’s due date.
The SJU Libraries do not charge for interlibrary loan services. However, some lending institutions charge fees which we pass on to you. Please indicate on your request the maximum amount you are willing to pay for an item. If we cannot get the item free of charge, we will only borrow up to the amount you are willing to pay.
Overdue and lost loans can jeopardize our relationship with lenders. Please return your loans by their due date. Overdue and lost book fines are determined by the lending institution and may be substantial. Any fines imposed are your responsibility. Chronic abuse of due dates may result in the suspension of your interlibrary loan privileges.
If you are placing ILL requests for a faculty member, you must have access to and submit the requests from the faculty member’s ILLiad account. Please do not submit requests for faculty from your account. If you do, you will be responsible for those items if lost or overdue.
