Spring 2017 Vice Provost's International Opportunities Program
As one of the best and brightest members of our St. John's community, you might be interested in a special opportunity to engage in a once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience – one especially designed to recognize your commitment to success as well as the leadership you have demonstrated through your academic achievement at St. John's.
The Vice-Provost of the Staten Island campus, Dr. James O’Keefe, is excited to announce the spring 2017 Vice Provost’s International Opportunities Program. This program is designed to give Staten Island students—both undergraduate and graduate—the opportunity to celebrate their St. John’s University experience with a week-long study abroad program in Rome, Italy! Though the program is centered on a Government and Politics course, we encourage all eligible SJU Staten Island Campus students to apply.
The best part about the program is that participants are only required to pay a $500 program fee and their airfare to and from Rome – nearly all other expenses are funded by the subsidy.
Tuition for undergraduate students will be included in your normal semester tuition bill as long as you meet full-time student status (12 to 18 credits). Graduate students will be billed separately for tuition and fees based on the prevailing cost of tuition for their designated college.
GOV 2670 – European Union Politics (3 credits)*
This course is open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students of all majors on the Staten Island Campus. The best part about the program is that participants are only required to pay a $500 program fee and their airfare to and from Rome – nearly all other expenses are funded by the subsidy.
The GOV 2670 course will begin in January with a class trip to Rome, Italy, and provides an overview of the history, structure, functions, processes and current issues of the European Union, with an emphasis on some of the founding states, such as Italy, France, Spain and Germany.
The course will particularly focus on how the integration into a large borderless common market and a single currency area (Euro Zone), has extended the 28 members states’ political and economic systems while at the same limited their ability to deal independently with some of their internal challenges. This will be examined through four current concerns: 1) the economic crisis, 2) the massive irregular migration, 3) security concerns, and the accommodation of ethnic and religious minorities.
The course should appeal to any student interested in European affairs without prior knowledge of the subject. Students from all disciplines and majors are welcome. Students will explore some of the most famous historical landmarks, interact with local academics and visit local organizations dealing with issues that are relevant to the course. The students will take advantage of resources available in Rome (academics, international organizations, NGOs and historic sites) to enhance their understanding of issues and challenges pertaining to international cooperation in general and to the EU relations with Italy in particular.
*Upon Return from Europe the course will continue through online lectures, reading and writing assignments and three meetings on campus on Thursday 2/23, 3/23, 4/20 at 9:05-10:30 AM.

Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate (sophomore-senior) students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The program is open to all majors in St. John’s University with the permission of your advisor or dean.
- Please note: Past Staten Island Vice Provost Fellowship participants are not eligible to participate in the 2017 Vice Provost International Opportunities program.
Anticipated Travel Dates: January 3 - January 10, 2017 (7 nights)
- Please note: students will arrive at the overseas campus on January 3 and depart from campus on January 10. Students will likely need to travel one day before the January 3 arrival date.
Costs: Students are responsible for a $500 program fee, cost of roundtrip airfare, and standard tuition, plus any incidental costs (i.e. some meals, souvenirs, etc.).

Passport Requirement: All students will need a passport that is valid through July 10, 2017.
Visa Requirement: A visa is NOT required for students who are US citizens. Non-US citizens should make an appointment with the Office of Global Studies to determine if a visa required and learn how to apply.
