Nature and Purpose of Agency
BedStuy Campaign Against Hunger (BSCAH) is a non-profit organization, working vigorously to end hunger in the BSCAH is a non-profit organization, working to end hunger in the Bedford-Stuyvesant / Brownsville / Ocean Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn by offering emergency food in a supermarket-style food pantry, and other social services including Food Stamp screenings, fitness classes and enrollment for publicly-supported health insurance.

Tasks Available for Students

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m
    Food pantry distribution (6 volunteers per shift)
    Intake: assisting clients complete paperwork related to social services, signing clients up to be receive food from the food pantry, and tracking their food pantry use (7 volunteers per shift)
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
    Stocking pantry shelves, cleaning the pantry (no client contact; can accommodate groups for this activity)
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 12:30-6:30 p.m.
    Food pantry distribution (6 volunteers per shift)
    Intake: assisting clients complete paperwork related to social services, signing clients up to be receive food from the food pantry, and tracking their food pantry use (7 volunteers per shift)
  • Flexible time: Creative and motivated student volunteers may plan and conduct cooking demonstrations, nutrition classes, exercise classes, resume writing workshops or other educational activities for BSCAH clients.

Time Requirements
Open.  During their first shift, intake volunteers will be trained by a current volunteer.

Volunteers may be asked to email or bring their resume to Tamara Dawson for review.

Agency Directions
Driving
Go west on Utopia Pkwy and take a right onto Grand Central Pkwy W.  Continue onto Interborough Pkwy/Jackie Robinson Pkwy W.  Turn right onto Jamaica Avenue, and right again onto Fulton Street.  BSCAH is on the left.

Public Transportation
Please check googlemaps.com or hopstop.com.  It will take about 1 -1.5 hours to get to BSCAH on pubic transportation.
