Nature and Purpose of Agency
JASA’s mission is to sustain and enrich the lives of the aging
in the New York metropolitan area so that they can remain in the
community with dignity and autonomy. JASA operates 26 senior
centers throughout the greater NYC area, and also provides other
support services for seniors.
Tasks Available for Students
A wide variety of activities are available, and vary by
location. Examples include:
- Teaching computer classes
- Assisting at Senior Center parties
- Painting a mural for a Senior Center
- Leading or assisting with social/recreational activities
(bingo, yoga, crafts, etc.)
- Planning or leading group trips (to museums, cultural events,
etc.)
- Conversing with seniors in the seniors’ native languages
(Russian, Chinese, etc.)
- Assisting with ESL classes
Time Requirements
Flexible; Centers are open Monday-Friday 9:00-4:00 p.m. (exact
hours/days vary by center)
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
Students must be informed that there is to be NO
FOOD and NO FLUIDS given to any resident
at any time. Also if students are not sure of any situation at any
time during the visit to reach out to the nurse or administrator at
the center.
