Nature and Purpose of Agency

The Gear-Up program is a discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Gear-Up is federally funded and is designed to provide support to students through mentoring, counseling, and tutoring.

Tasks Available for Students

  • Volunteer will assist students (grade 9-11) with academic assignment in high school content area and provide a positive role models to Gear-Up participants
  • Homework help/ Tutoring
  • Workshops for students
  • Learning Styles Assessment
  • Saturday Science programs
  • Community service opportunities
  • Gear-Up Clubs

Time Requirements

Minimum 15 hours



Student Awareness/Special Instructions

Partnership schools they work with are: Long Island City High School, I.S. 145 Joseph Pulitzer Intermediate (Jackson Heights), and I.S. 126 Albert Shanker School of Visual and Performances Arts (L.I.C.)
