Nature and Purpose of
Since 1979, Catholic Charities Immigrant and Refugee
Services has assisted immigrants and refugees throughout
metropolitan New York. A staff of attorneys, immigration
counselors, refugee resettlement caseworkers, and outreach and
education coordinators provides refugee reception and placement and
job development and placement. Staff is multicultural and
speaks more than fifteen languages.
Tasks Available for
- Incarcerated Immigrants - read through letters received from
prisoners and conduct any necessary research needed prior to
replying to the letter. I.E. prisoners write a letter
searching for legal representation, a family member, etc.
- Immigration Hotline - background research and referrals needed
for calls that come through the immigration hotline open to the
- Language Skills needed; translate and possible draft
documents. Spanish, French, Russian and many more language
- Children’s Village in Jamaica Screening Center - children and
adolescents have been arrested for breaking immigration laws.
The Center needs assistance with translation.
- Outreach needed; marketing majors – visit community board
meetings and fairs; promote hotline and agency needs.
- Immigration Legal Services - provide one-on-one ESL and civics
instruction to citizenship applicants preparing for their
immigration interviews, review files for completion – close
A minimum of 15 hours per semester. Monday though Friday
9-5pm. Possible weekend hours.
Take the 4,5,N,R to 59th and Lexington. Walk approximately
six to seven blocks. Located on First Avenue (side of the
Church). Our offices are located at 1011 First Avenue,
between 55th and 56th Streets, on the 12th floor.
Start out going south on Utopia Pkwy toward 80th rd. Turn slight
right onto Grand Central Pkwy West. Merge onto GCP West via
the ramp on the left heading toward Triboro Bridge. Take the I-495
West (Long Island Expressway) exit- exit 10W - towards Eastern Long
Island/Manhattan. Take exit 15 toward Van Dam Street. Stay straight
to go onto Queens Midtown Expressway / Borden Ave. Turn right
onto Van Dam Street. Turn slight left onto Queens Blvd. /
NY-25 W. Turn slight left onto Queensboro Bridge. Stay straight to
go onto Queensboro Bridge – Lower Level /59th St. Bridge. Take the
2 Ave. - south ramp. Make a left onto 2nd Ave. Make a left onto
East 54th Street. Turn left onto 1st Ave. Our offices are located
