Last summer, under the direction of Alina
Camacho-Gingerich, Ph.D., St. John’s University brought
its successful Study Abroad Program to Argentina.
The program included an intense study of the language, literature,
and culture of this expansive South American country. Among its
main attractions were visits to Buenos Aires, Corrientes,
Montevideo, Iguaçu Falls and the Argentine Pampas.
One of the world’s most beautiful cities, Buenos Aires is known
for its elegant architecture, trendy fashion and vibrant blend of
European and Latin American culture. Students explored picturesque
neighborhoods and modern wonders, strengthening their Spanish
language skills as they soaked up the history and culture of this
fascinating country.
In addition to their studies, students viewed exhibits at
several local museums, and discussed renowned Argentinean cultural
figures such as Jorge Luis Borges. They attended a
performance in the famous Teatro
Colón, saw plays, and enjoyed the wonderful cuisine
offered by this diverse country.
While visiting Corrientes, a province in the north of Argentina,
students toured the city and surrounding areas, took a ride on the
Paraná River, visited local theatres, museums and the beautiful
Iguaçu Falls. At both locations, the students heard lectures from
prominent Argentinean scholars, including Dr. Noé
Jitrik, of the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and Dr.
Angel Rodríguez, President of the Universidad de la Cuenca del Plata.

Argentina study abroad program. We enjoyed meaningful conversations
during class and interacted with locals and travelers from
different cultures and backgrounds. I learned a great deal from Dr.
Camacho and Dr. Noé Jitrik at the University of Buenos Aires, and
Rector Angel Rodríguez at the Universidad de la Plata in
Corrientes. Some of the many highlights of the program were the
trips to Café Tortoni for a Tango show, a visit to the Borges
Exhibition, Iguazú Falls and the Santa Ana Mission in Missiones. I
left Argentina with a pair of Tango shoes, a craving for empanadas,
malbec, alfajores, and the passion to read more amazing
Iberoamerican literature. I am ready to eat and dance my way back
next summer!"
