Reflecting a long-standing focus on academic as well as athletic
success, 161 St. John’s athletes have been named to this year’s BIG EAST All-Academic Team — a
20 percent increase over last year.
Last
year, 134 St. John’s athletes were named to the conference’s
All-Academic Team, recognizing high achievement in the classroom as
well as the playing courts and fields. Leading St. John’s teams for
the second-straight year, the
women’s soccer team had 24 honorees.
Cross country/track and field was second with 22 honorees;
lacrosse, a close third with 21.
The honorees will receive certificates in a special, half-time
presentation during a
men’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden sometime this
season.
With winners in the classroom as well as the playing courts and
fields, St. John’s 16 Division I, BIG EAST men’s and women’s
athletic teams
reflect St. John’s 141-year
tradition of excellence as a Catholic,
Vincentian university that prepares students for leadership in
their professions, communities and world.
