Air Emission and the American English Dialects: Preliminary
Data
Date:
Monday, April 22
Location:
Kelleher Center Lounge (1st Floor)
Time:
Common Hour (1:50 – 3:15 PM)
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Patrick Walden
Emission of air through the nose during speech is a normal part of
American English. Yet, some dialects of American English may differ
in the relative amount of air that leaves the nose during certain
speech sounds or combination of sounds. Under the guidance of Dr.
Patrick Walden, speech pathology majors have investigated the
amount of air leaving the nose during speech for clients of
different ages and genders. These results from the New York dialect
were also compared to published norms from the Midwestern United
States.
