Professor Claire Serant to be Honored by New York Association of Black Journalists

St. John’s University journalism professor Claire Serant has
been named as a special honoree at the 20th Annual New York
Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) Scholarship & Awards
Dinner. The NYABJ Dinner will take place on February 13, hosted by
WABC-TV’s Sade Baderinwa and WCBS-TV’s Maurice Dubois at Columbia
University in the Low Library Rotunda 6:00 p.m.
Serant, a faculty member in the Division of Mass Communication,
Journalism, Television and Film at St. John’s University, earned
her Master’s degree in Journalism at Columbia University. In
addition to her education background, Serant worked as a reporter
with the New York Daily News for 16 years. Serant is
currently a freelance reporter for New York Newsday and the
Englewood Magazine in New Jersey. As a professor at St.
John’s, Serant is guiding and assisting her students to jobs at
major newspapers all across the country.
The NYABJ recognizes the best in Print, New Media, Radio,
Magazine and Television reporting issues that affect the Black
Diaspora. Additional honorees include: Roz Abrams, the late
Gerald Boyd, Alphonso Van Marsh and Wilbert Tatum.
The New York Association of Black Journalists was founded in
1976 to pursue the common concerns and goals of black media
professionals. Today it is the largest chapter of the National
Association of Black Journalists, which is the world’s largest
organization of journalists of color with over 3,300 members.
