In only her third competition of the 2011
outdoor season, St. John's senior Priscilla Frederick tied for seventh place at
the annual USA Track & Field Championships
with a season-best leap of 1.83 meters (6 feet) this weekend at
historic Hayward Field on the University of
Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.
Frederick, who is recently removed from a
two-week Vincentian mission to Panama, missed her opening attempt
at 1.78 meters (5 feet 10 inches) before clearing the same height
on her second jump. The senior missed her first two attempts at the
1.83 meter mark, before clearing the height on her third and final
leap. Facing windy conditions, Frederick failed to clear 1.86
meters (6 feet 1 inch), just barely scraping the bar on her second
attempt.
Her seventh place finish is her fourth
top-10 placing at the USA Track &
Field Championships over the past four years. Frederick
placed fifth at the USA Junior
Championships as a freshman and followed with a sixth and
third place finish at the 2010 Indoor and Outdoor
Championships, respectively. Last season, the
Sicklerville, N.J., native placed 10th at the
outdoor competition. This season's seventh place finish qualifies
her for the pool of athletes for selection to the USA
Team for the
2011 Pan American Games, which will take place from
October 14-30 in Mexico.
