Windows XP Only
This document will provide tips to help you to logon to the St.
John’s University network quickly.
The User Profile
The PC profile customizes your account settings and data.
Every full-time faculty member has a roaming profile that is stored
on the network that can be accessed from computers on the St.
John’s University campuses. Roaming user profiles give you a
working environment (appearance, settings, preferences, data files)
that is consistent on your home campus and other campuses.
- Upon logging in, the roaming profile is copied to the Documents
and Settings Folder on the C: drive.
- Upon logging off, the profile in the Documents and Settings
Folder updates the roaming profile on the network.
Documents and Settings Folder
This is part of the profile and contains desktop items and
Internet Explorer Temporary files. The process of reading these
items into your PC’s memory causes excessively long login times.
The computer may time out when logging into a computer on another
campus due to large files and programs stored on the desktop and an
excessive number of Internet Explorer Temporary files.
Domains
For most of your work use the d_qmst_01 domain. If you are
trying to access the St. John’s University network within a
classroom use the d_qmst_02 domain. Logging onto the incorrect
domain may cause problems with Outlook or may make logging in
slow.
Noting Where Files Have Been Saved
You must be physically on campus to access your H: drive
which is a St. John’s University network drive specific to St.
John’s University users. The local hard drive is the C: drive. It
is important to note where a file is saved. Within the Save As
Window select a different location for saving the file if
necessary. Files can be saved to:
- The H: network drive (preferable)
- The C: local hard drive (from off-campus when you cannot access
the H: drive)
- Remember to delete all unnecessary or unused files.
Deleting Temporary Internet Files
The Temporary Internet Files folder contains Web page
content that is stored on your hard disk for quick viewing. This
folder permits your browser to download only the content that has
changed since you last viewed a Web page, instead of downloading
all the content for a page every time it is displayed. Deleting
Temporary Internet Files increases PC performance.
- On the desktop right click the Internet Explorer Icon
- Select Properties
- In the Temporary Internet Files section select Delete
Cookies
- Select OK
- Select Delete Files and place a checkmark in the Delete
all Offline Content checkbox
- Select OK
Creating Folders
As you store more files on your PC, you can keep things
organized by placing related files in folders.
- Right click the Start Button
- Select Explore
- In the left pane, left click the folder in which you want to
create a new folder.
- On the Menu Bar click File
- Select New and select Folder.
- Name the folder and save or move files to this folder.
- Remember to back up files; the CD burner on the laptop will
save files to a CD.
- You can see a Backup Files
onto CD Tutorial for more information.
Creating Shortcuts for Frequently Used
Files, Folders, or Programs
- Double click the My Computer Icon on the desktop.
- Navigate through the directory structure to the file, folder or
program that the Shortcut will launch.
- Right click the file, folder or program and select Create
Shortcut.
- If you are within the top level of the C: drive directory
structure, a message stating that the shortcut will be put on the
desktop appears, click OK.
- If you are within a lower level of the C: drive directory
structure, no message will appear and it is necessary to drag the
Shortcut onto the desktop.
- If the window that the Shortcut appears in obscures the
desktop, shrink that window by clicking the Restore Down/Maximize
Window Button in the upper right corner of the screen.
- After the window has been restored down, click on the perimeter
of the window. When the double headed arrow appears drag the arrow
toward the center of the window to expose the desktop
underneath.
