International Travel and Research: A look
at the ideas and strategies behind the creation of the exhibition
Sublime Porte: Art and Contemporary Turkey.
The exhibition at the Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery,
intended to acquaint viewers with a portrait of contemporary
Turkish society, was the outgrowth of a trip to Turkey sponsored by
the Turkish Cultural Center undertaken by a group of St. John’s
faculty and administrators in 2011. Gallery Director and co-curator
of the exhibition, Parvez Moshin, will discuss the complexities of
organizing an international exhibition of this scope, and Fine Arts
Department Professor Paul Fabozzi will speak on the research
methods and strategies he used in the creation of work specifically
for this show.

Parvez Mohsin serves as the Director of St.
John's University's Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery. He
studied architecture at the Universidad Jose Maria Vargas and
graphic design at the Instituto de Diseño Darias in Caracas,
Venezuela. He also received a BFA, a Master of Arts in
Liberal Studies and an M.A. in Global Development and Social
Justice from St. John’s University. Mohsin has undertaken
many curatorial projects alongside renowned scholars that have
garnered national and international acclaim. His curatorial
research focuses on identifying the needs of underrepresented
communities and initiating projects with an emphasis on cultural
preservation and humanitarian advocacy through the arts.

Professor Paul Fabozzi has been a member of the
St. John’s University Fine Arts faculty since 1994. He received his
BFA from Alfred University and his MFA from the University of
Pennsylvania. Additional studies include SUNY Buffalo in Siena,
Italy and the University of Georgia at Athens in Cortona, Italy.
His paintings and works on paper have been included in numerous
solo and group shows throughout the United States and Europe. His
work is included in numerous private and public collections,
including Fidelity Investments, the University of Pennsylvania, and
the San Diego Museum of Art. Awards include the Georgia Foundation
Grant for Foreign Travel and a fellowship in Drawing from the New
York Foundation for the Arts. He edited an anthology of writings on
contemporary art—titled Artists, Critics, Context: Readings in and
around American Art Since 1945—published by Prentice-Hall in 2002.
He is represented by the G.W. Einstein Gallery in New York and the
LGTripp Gallery in Philadelphia.
