Check Your Emergency Contact Information Today!

September 10, 2012

September is National Preparedness Month

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) sponsors National Preparedness Month every year to encourage Americans to prepare for all kinds of emergencies.

This is an opportune time to check your families’ emergency plan and verify that your Emergency Contact information at the University is current.  Employees can check their information by logging into UIS.  Click on “Personal Information” and check both the “View Update Emergency Contacts” and the “Update Your Emergency Notification Information for Instant Messaging” links to be sure the information is current.  Students can check their information by logging into St. John’s Central, clicking on the UIS tab and then “Personal Information” and checking the same two links. If you do not have an emergency contact listed it is imperative that a suitable one be supplied

St. John’s University’s preparedness efforts have been recognized by the NYC OEM and the University has received the New York City Office of Emergency Management’s ‘Partners in Preparedness Seal’. Throughout this month we encourage you to visit the NYC OEM webpage (www.nyc.gov/oem) where they have Emergency Preparedness information and Ready New York Preparedness Resource Guides that address being ready for various emergencies.  We also encourage you to register for NYC’s emergency notification service, Notify NYC at Notify NYC - About  which provides emergency alerts, significant event notification (utility outages, etc. in your zip code), Public Health notifications, Public School closures and delayed openings as well as unscheduled parking rule suspensions.
