A Conversation with the Honorable Carol Bagley
Amon
United States Chief District Judge
United States District Court for the Eastern District of New
York
Judge Amon was appointed to the Eastern District bench in 1990. She
is a graduate of the College of William & Mary (1968) and the
University of Virginia School of Law (1971). Following law school,
she was an attorney at the Communications Satellite Corporation in
Washington, D.C. In 1973, she joined the U.S. Department of
Justice. From 1974-1986, she was an Assistant United States
Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, serving at various
times as Chief of Frauds, Chief of General Crimes, and Senior
Litigation Counsel. In 1983, Attorney General William French Smith
awarded her the John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal
Achievement. In 1986, she became a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the
Eastern District, serving in that position until her appointment as
a Federal District Judge. Judge Amon became the Chief Judge of the
Eastern District in April 2011.
