Take
Back the Night, a night to hear the voices of survivors of sexual
violence and to stand up and fight back to, “Shatter the Silence,
Stop the Violence,” is proud to welcome Jinahie as this year’s
keynote performer. Jinahie, an extraordinarily gifted, 19
year old Egyptian-American spoken word poet will unveil the
infection of violence in our global society in a way that will
captivate any audience and motivate our plan to take action in our
own community.
Jinahie, (“my wings” in Arabic) is an extraordinarily gifted, 19
year old Egyptian-American spoken word poet hailing from DC. Over
the past few years, she has quickly become one of DC’s finest
spoken word poets and is a highly sought after performer. Jinahie’s
unique style on stage has captivated audiences of all ages and
ethnic backgrounds. Her poetry creatively spans a variety of issues
and cultures; her technique is a masterful display of craft,
precision, skill, and grace. In 2008, Jinahie competed and
was selected to hold a coveted spot on the Maryland Youth Slam Team
as part of the Brave New Voices (BNV) International Youth Poetry
Slam (2008, DC) which was made into a documentary series on HBO
(Russell Simmons).
For Jinahie, spoken word is a vehicle to inspire and educate
others. Her areas of interest include gender, ethnic strife,
racial prejudice, sexuality, poverty, corruption, war, and
injustice. Currently, Jinahie is a psychology and creative
writing double major at the University of Maryland, College Park,
and performs her spoken word at colleges and universities
throughout the country. She serves as a mentor for abused and
disadvantaged children, works with students with disabilities, and
guest teaches local creative writing workshops. She is also
currently involved in several collaborative efforts with other
spoken word artists and musician having shared the stage with many
including: Common, Mos Def, Thirteen, MC K-Swift, The Roots, John
Mayer, Branford Marsalis, Smokey Robinson, and Baba Israel.
She hopes to become a counselor for abused, traumatized, and
disadvantaged youth with a focus on the use of spoken word.
