Meet the Artist: Linda Butti
As part of this continuing series, a student panel interviews Linda
Butti on her background in the arts, especially painting. An
Adjunct Associate Professor of Art in St. John’s College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences, Professor Butti says she paints “because I have
to. It’s the only way I have of expressing my very active inner
life. My emotions, unconscious mind and my intuitions are all
called upon to comment on a particular idea — it allows me to
challenge, dissect and make decisions on elements that are
intellectual and intangible in the physical aspect of
living.”
A New Yorker, Professor Butti has exhibited her work in more than
20 solo exhibitions at spaces including Elaine Benson Gallery, in
Bridgehampton, NY; Snug Snug Harbor Cultural Center, on Staten
Island; the SUNY Institute of Technology, in Utica, NY; Fulton St
Gallery, in Troy, NY; Whitehall Gallery, in New York City; St
John’s University, in Queens, NY; and at the Mohawk Valley Center
for the Arts, in Little Falls, NY. She also has been included in
more than 100 juried group shows in venues as diverse as the
Brooklyn Museum, Korea Invitational Exhibit, the Canajoharie Art
Museum and Library, and the National Arts Club, NYC.
The recipient of many art awards and seven NYSCA grants, Professor
Butti was named the 1992 “Woman of the Year” by the National
Organization of Italian-American Women. She is included in the
Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in American Art. Her work
is included in numerous public and private collections, including
NBC Studios; Brenau University: Sterling Drug, Inc.; Mitsubishi
Capital; The Duran Group; The Kupperheimer Corporation;
Rhone-Poulenc Rover, Inc.; Sterling Drug, Inc.; and the Chief
