St. John's University Participates in its
4th Recycle Mania Competition
St. John’s has successfully kicked off its
participation in the 2013 RecycleMania tournament, the national
competition in which college campuses compete over eight weeks to
see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste.
In addition to St. John’s, more than 600
schools representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and
five Canadian provinces will compete in nine categories to see who
recycles the most on a per capita basis, who produces the least
amount of waste and who recycles the largest percentage of their
overall waste stream. The competition runs through March
30.
St. John’s is competing in the formal
competition, which ranks schools based on standardized weight
measurements. Schools submit weight data for paper, cardboard, cans
and bottles, food waste and general trash each week, and are in
turn able to see how they measure up against each other in the
continuously updated results.

the exception of Spring Break, raffle drawings are held at
Montgoris; raffle winners receive a $25 AMEX gift card. To be
eligible, student must commit to "Do The Right Thing" and/ or be

New to STJ is our O2 Compost system. We have
begun to collect food waste from cafeterias around campus and will
produce compost to be used on the grounds around school. The O2
System is a very innovative initiative that gives STJ a very unique
opportunity to be a leader among universities in composting.
The volumes of garbage and recycle collected are recorded and
converted to pounds. The total pounds are submitted each week to
RecycleMania and the results can be viewed on our
profile page.
