At the request of many of our students, it is our privilege to
announce the formation of a new and exciting organization, "Circolo Garibaldi." Courtesy of our
campus community and the Department of Student Life, this latest
Club is a tribute to our Italian-American community, both on and
off campus. The opening ceremony of “Circolo Garibaldi” was held on
Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 where we recognized a number of
prominent Italian-American citizens from Staten Island.
Headed by Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, other honorees included
City Councilman and Minority Leader, James
S. Oddo, the first New York State Regent from Staten Island,
Christine Cea and Assistant Chief
and NYPD Borough Commander for Staten Island, Stephen R. Paragallo.
"Circolo Garibaldi", while paying tribute to the leader of the
unification of Italy and Staten Island resident during the latter
part of the 19th century, celebrates the positive Italian-American
traditions that have permeated our community. In addition, “Circolo
Garibaldi” advocates for the return of the Italian language as a
major course taught in our schools.
