Promoting Peace Through Education
Greg Mortenson

A renowned humanitarian, international peacemaker and former mountaineer, Greg Mortenson is the author of The New York Times No. 1 bestseller Three Cups of Tea. Recipient of the prestigious Kiriyama “Peace Book Award,” the work also earned Time magazine’s 2006 “Asia Book of the Year.” Mr. Mortenson is co-founder of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute and founder of the nonprofit Pennies for Peace foundation.

In 1993, Mr. Mortenson was in the Pakistani village of Korphe after an especially arduous climb on K2, the world’s second highest mountain. It was there that he encountered a group of children sitting in the dirt, using sticks to practice writing in the sand. Moved by the scene, Mr. Mortenson promised to help build them a school.

The effort grew into a lifelong humanitarian campaign promoting education in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan — especially for girls. Since then, Mr. Mortenson has established more than 131 schools in often volatile rural areas of those two countries. The schools educate more than 58,000 children — 44,000 girls — in places where few educational opportunities had ever existed.
